Your number, worked out step by step.

Your life path number is a single digit (or a master number: 11, 22 or 33) found by reducing your birth month, day and year and adding them together. This page includes a calculator, a full step-by-step method you can do by hand, and a short reading for every number from 1 to 9 plus 11, 22 and 33.

Enter your birth date below and the calculator will show your life path number with the working.

What the life path number is

In Western numerology, the life path number is the most talked-about number in a person's chart. It comes from your full date of birth and is read as a sketch of your natural temperament and the themes you keep meeting. Most modern versions use the Pythagorean system, named after the Greek thinker Pythagoras, in which numbers are reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. Some numbers are left unreduced and treated as master numbers: 11, 22 and 33.

People use it the way others use a horoscope: as a reflective mirror. It offers language for your habits, and many enjoy how well a description fits. Read it as a friendly prompt for self-knowledge, and take what feels true.

Quick tip. If your total lands on 11, 22 or 33, keep it there. Most calculators, including the one above, treat those three as master numbers and show the reduced single digit too (2, 4 or 6) so you can read both.

How to calculate your life path number by hand

The method has four steps. It works with any date of birth.

The numbers behind the reading.
  1. Write your birth date as month, day and year.
  2. Reduce the month, the day and the year separately by adding their digits until you reach a single digit, unless you land on 11, 22 or 33.
  3. Add the three results together.
  4. Reduce that total the same way. If it lands on 11, 22 or 33, stop there.

Reducing each part separately first is what lets the master numbers show up cleanly. Many people who add every digit of the date in one go get a different total, so if your result surprises you, try the separate method.

A worked example

Take 23 March 1991.

PartWorkingResult
Month: March33
Day: 232 + 35
Year: 19911 + 9 + 9 + 1 = 20, then 2 + 02
Total3 + 5 + 2 = 10, then 1 + 01

This person's life path number is 1. Now a master number example: 9 November 1989. November gives 11, which we keep. The day is 9. The year gives 1 + 9 + 8 + 9 = 27, then 2 + 7 = 9. The total is 11 + 9 + 9 = 29, and 2 + 9 = 11. That person has a life path of 11, often written 11/2 because its root is 2.

What each life path number means

The readings below are popular interpretations from the numerology tradition. Each person is more than any number, so treat them as prompts. If you want to understand why certain numbers seem to follow you around, the pages on angel number meanings and the angel numbers guide cover the everyday side of number symbolism.

Strengths: Deep empathy, generosity and a natural gift for nurturing. A gentle growth edge: Setting boundaries so that caring for everyone does not empty your own cup.

How to use your number in daily life

You can turn the reading into something practical without treating it as a rule. Read your strengths and pick one to lean on this week. Read your growth edge and choose one small habit that supports it. A life path 4 might schedule a walk with no plan. A life path 5 might pick one project and give it Saturday morning.

Journaling works well here. Prompts such as "Where do I already act like my number?" and "Where do I want to stretch?" turn a number into a conversation with yourself. The manifestation journal prompts page has more questions like these, and intention setting for manifestation shows how to turn a reflection into a clear next step.

You may also like to compare your life path with other personal numbers, such as a birthday number or the number that keeps appearing on clocks. The page on seeing the same number everywhere explains how people read repeating digits.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year separately to single digits (keeping 11, 22 and 33), add the three results, and reduce again. For 23 March 1991: 3 + 5 + 2 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.

What are master numbers in numerology?

Master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. They are left unreduced in a life path calculation and are read as carrying a stronger, more demanding version of the reduced digit.

What is the most common life path number?

There is no official count, but every number from 1 to 9 turns up regularly, and the master numbers appear less often because they need a specific combination.

Can my life path number change?

Your birth date does not change, so the number stays the same. What can change is how you relate to it as you grow.
