Name numerology turns the letters of your full birth name into three numbers: the expression number (also called destiny), the soul urge number (heart's desire) and the personality number. Each letter has a value from 1 to 9 in the Pythagorean chart. The totals are reduced to one digit, and 11, 22 and 33 are kept as master numbers.
Type your full name as it appears on your birth certificate below, and the calculator will show all three numbers with the working.
What name numerology looks at
Your life path number comes from your birth date. Name numbers come from the words your family chose for you. Numerologists read the name as a second portrait: what you tend to do in the world, what you long for underneath, and how others tend to meet you.
Many people enjoy it the way they enjoy a horoscope, as a mirror that offers new language for old habits. You can read more of the tradition's story in the Britannica entry on numerology. Take what feels true and leave the rest.
Quick tip. Use the name on your birth certificate for the most traditional reading. Many people also try the name they use every day, such as a married name or a chosen name, and enjoy comparing the two.
The Pythagorean letter chart
The Pythagorean system, the one most people use online, gives each letter of the alphabet a number by counting from 1 to 9 and starting over. A is 1, B is 2, up to I as 9, then J is 1 again.

| Value | Letters |
|---|---|
| 1 | A, J, S |
| 2 | B, K, T |
| 3 | C, L, U |
| 4 | D, M, V |
| 5 | E, N, W |
| 6 | F, O, X |
| 7 | G, P, Y |
| 8 | H, Q, Z |
| 9 | I, R |
There is an older system called Chaldean, which gives some letters different values and does not use 9 for letters. This page and the calculator use Pythagorean only, so results can differ from Chaldean charts you find elsewhere.
The three numbers and which letters they use
| Number | Letters used | Popular reading |
|---|---|---|
| Expression (destiny) | Every letter of the full birth name | Your natural talents and how you go about things |
| Soul urge (heart's desire) | The vowels: A, E, I, O, U | What you long for and what moves you inside |
| Personality | The consonants | The impression you make on people meeting you |
A note about the letter Y. Some teachers count Y as a vowel when it makes a vowel sound, as in "Lynn", and as a consonant when it sounds like the start of a word, as in "Yara". Deciding that letter by letter is complicated, so the calculator counts Y as a consonant every time. If your name has a vowel-sounding Y and you prefer the other tradition, you can move its value (7) from the personality total to the soul urge total yourself.
How to work out your name numbers by hand
- Write out your full birth name: first, middle and last names.
- Write each letter's value from the chart above under it.
- For the expression number, add every value. For the soul urge, add only the vowels. For the personality number, add only the consonants.
- Reduce each total by adding its digits until you reach a single digit, unless you reach 11, 22 or 33.
The calculator adds every letter in the name first and then reduces once. Some teachers reduce each name separately and add the results, and both are used, so a person may see two answers if they compare sources.

A worked example
Take the name Anna Lee.
| Number | Letters and values | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expression | A1 N5 N5 A1 L3 E5 E5 | 25, then 2 + 5 | 7 |
| Soul urge | A1 A1 E5 E5 | 12, then 1 + 2 | 3 |
| Personality | N5 N5 L3 | 13, then 1 + 3 | 4 |
Notice that 3 + 4 gives 7. Vowels plus consonants always add up to the whole name, which makes a handy way to check your work. When a total is 29, 2 + 9 gives 11, and the number is kept as 11, written 11/2.
What the numbers mean
Read the short descriptions below as popular interpretations from the numerology tradition. For expression, they suggest a way you may go about things. For soul urge, they suggest what you long for. For personality, they suggest how you may come across. Curious about numbers that show up in daily life? The angel number meaning page covers those.
1: The Initiator
Independence, drive and a wish to begin things. It can suggest someone who prefers to lead the way and who learns to share the steering wheel.
2: The Peacemaker
Tact, partnership and quiet strength. It can suggest a sensitive listener who feels best when things are calm and shared.
3: The Communicator
Expression, humour and creativity. It can suggest someone who brings light to a room and grows when they finish what they start.
4: The Builder
Reliability, order and patient work. It can suggest a person who loves solid foundations and who benefits from a little play.
5: The Explorer
Freedom, curiosity and change. It can suggest someone who learns by doing and needs room to move.
6: The Nurturer
Care, responsibility and a love of home and community. It can suggest the friend others lean on, who also deserves care.
7: The Seeker
Reflection, study and a need for quiet. It can suggest a deep thinker who values solitude and trust.
8: The Achiever
Ambition, organisation and a sense for results. It can suggest a natural leader who balances work and rest.
9: The Humanitarian
Compassion, generosity and a wide view. It can suggest an old-soul heart that gives freely and learns to receive.
11: The Intuitive (master number)
Heightened intuition, inspiration and sensitivity. Numerologists read it as a stronger form of 2, with a pull toward teaching, art or healing work, and a nervous system that likes gentle routines.
22: The Master Builder (master number)
The practical dreamer who can plan something large and make it real. It is read as a stronger form of 4, and it does best with patience and support around it.
33: The Master Teacher (master number)
The rarest of the three, linked with devoted, compassionate service. It is read as a stronger form of 6, and asks for firm boundaries so that caring for others leaves something for yourself.
When your result is a master number, the calculator also shows its reduced digit (2, 4 or 6) so you can read both, as you can on the life path number calculator.
Using your name numbers
Compare the three numbers and see whether they agree. An expression 8 with a soul urge 2 might describe a person who works with drive and longs for calm partnership. That contrast is often the interesting part. Then pair the reading with your personal year number to see what your year asks of that person.
A short journal entry brings it to life. Try "Where do I already act like my expression number?" and "What does my soul urge want more of this week?" The manifestation journal prompts page has more, and the journal prompt generator can hand you one for today. If a reading gives you something you want to work toward, intention setting for manifestation shows how to turn it into one clear sentence, and the angel numbers guide is a friendly next stop for number symbolism.
Where manifestlings fits
A name number can give words to a theme, and small habits help it feel real. manifestlings is built for the habit part. It is a virtual pet, a dreamling, that grows on what you practise. Around it sit a wish you can look at again, a short game made from your words, small rituals, care on the real clock, and a guided meditation with 4-2-6 breathing.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate my name number?
Give each letter its Pythagorean value (A=1 to I=9, J=1 to R=9, S=1 to Z=8), add them all for the expression number, then reduce to one digit, keeping 11, 22 and 33.
What is the soul urge number?
It is the total of the vowels in your full birth name (A, E, I, O, U), reduced to one digit. Numerologists read it as what you long for inside, also called the heart's desire.
What is the difference between expression and personality numbers?
The expression number uses every letter of your name and describes your natural talents. The personality number uses only the consonants and describes the impression you make on others.
Which name should I use, birth name or current name?
Traditional numerology uses the full name on your birth certificate. Many people also try the name they use daily and compare the two readings.
