Your personal year number is a single digit from 1 to 9 that numerologists use to describe the theme of the year you are in. You find it by adding your birth month, your birth day and the calendar year, then reducing the total to one digit. This page has a calculator, the working step by step, and a short reading for every personal year.
Enter your birth month and day below, and change the year if you want to look at a different one (it starts on 2027).
What a personal year number is
Numerology, a tradition that reads meaning into numbers, sees life as moving through cycles of nine years. Your personal year says where you are in the current cycle, a little like a season. Year 1 is the planting, year 9 is the harvest and the clearing of the field, and then a new year 1 begins.
People use it as a gentle calendar for their intentions. A year 4 might suggest building routines, a year 5 might suggest room for change. It works like a life path number that moves with the calendar instead of staying fixed at birth. For background, see the Britannica entry on numerology.
Quick tip. The calculator turns your year on 1 January. Some teachers turn it on your birthday, so around that date you can read both numbers and see which fits.
How to work out your personal year by hand
The method takes three short steps.

- Reduce your birth month to a single digit. January to September are already single digits. October is 1 + 0 = 1, November is 1 + 1 = 2 (many keep it as 11), and December is 1 + 2 = 3.
- Reduce your birth day the same way. The 23rd becomes 2 + 3 = 5.
- Reduce the calendar year: 2027 is 2 + 0 + 2 + 7 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2. Add the three results and reduce again until one digit is left.
For someone born on 23 March, in 2027 the sum is 3 + 5 + 2 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. That is a personal year 1. The same person in 2028 adds 3 + 5 + 3 = 11, which reduces to 2.
| Birthday | Working for 2027 | Personal year |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January | 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 | 4 |
| 15 February | 2 + 6 + 2 = 10, then 1 + 0 | 1 |
| 23 March | 3 + 5 + 2 = 10, then 1 + 0 | 1 |
| 4 May | 5 + 4 + 2 = 11, then 1 + 1 | 2 (shown as 11/2) |
| 8 September | 9 + 8 + 2 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 | 1 |
| 25 December | 3 + 7 + 2 = 12, then 1 + 2 | 3 |
The year 2027 itself reduces to 2, which many numerologists link with cooperation and patience. Your personal year adds your own layer on top.
Personal months: zooming in
Once you know your personal year, you can find a number for each month. Add your personal year number to the number of the calendar month (January is 1, February is 2, and so on to December, which can be read as 12 or as 3), then reduce to a single digit.
Take a personal year 1. In June, the sixth month, you add 1 + 6 = 7, so June is a personal month 7. In December it is 1 + 12 = 13, and 1 + 3 = 4. The month number works as a small color inside the larger theme of the year.
What each personal year means
These are popular interpretations from the numerology tradition. Treat them as prompts. Write down how the description lands for you, and keep what feels true. If you like watching numbers as signs, the angel numbers guide covers the everyday side of that.

Personal year 1: The Beginning
A year 1 opens a new nine-year cycle. It is often described as a year for planting seeds, starting projects and stepping out on your own. Good to lean into: small first steps, decisions that are yours to make, courage. A gentle reminder: a start does not have to be loud. One clear first step is enough.
Personal year 2: The Patient Year
A year 2 is linked with cooperation, waiting and sensitivity. Numerologists describe it as a year when ideas planted in year 1 grow slowly and relationships matter. Good to lean into: listening, partnerships, gentle progress. A gentle reminder: slow is still moving. Rest belongs in the plan.
Personal year 3: The Expressive Year
A year 3 is associated with creativity, social life and joy. It is often described as the time to speak up, play and share what you make. Good to lean into: creative projects, friendships, saying what you feel. A gentle reminder: pick a few things and finish them, so the fun has something to stand on.
Personal year 4: The Foundation Year
A year 4 is linked with structure, routine and honest work. It is often described as a year to lay foundations, organise money and health, and build something that lasts. Good to lean into: planning, habits, patience with details. A gentle reminder: add a little spontaneity and rest, so steadiness stays warm.
Personal year 5: The Change Year
A year 5 sits at the centre of the cycle and is popularly linked with change, travel and freedom. It is described as a year when life feels more mobile. Good to lean into: trying new things, flexibility, meeting new people. A gentle reminder: keep a few anchors, such as sleep, meals and a friend to call.
Personal year 6: The Home Year
A year 6 is associated with family, home, love and responsibility. It is often described as a year of caring for others and for your surroundings. Good to lean into: relationships, home projects, generosity. A gentle reminder: your own care counts too. Let others carry a share.
Personal year 7: The Inner Year
A year 7 is linked with reflection, study and spiritual curiosity. It is described as a quieter year for looking inward and refining what you believe. Good to lean into: learning, time alone, journaling, nature. A gentle reminder: quiet does not mean stuck. Trust that a slow year has its own progress.
Personal year 8: The Achievement Year
A year 8 is associated with ambition, results and how we handle power and money. It is often described as a year when effort becomes visible. Good to lean into: career goals, clear plans, fair dealing. A gentle reminder: measure success by more than results, and keep time for people.
Personal year 9: The Completion Year
A year 9 closes the cycle. It is described as a year of finishing, forgiving, clearing out and letting things go before a new beginning arrives. Good to lean into: tidying, endings done well, generosity. A gentle reminder: grief and relief can both appear. Be gentle with yourself while things wrap up.
Master numbers 11 and 22 in a personal year
Sometimes your sum lands on 11 or 22 before the last reduction, as with 4 May above. In the calculator, those are shown as 11/2 or 22/4. Many teachers read the master number as a heightened, more intense version of the reduced digit: an 11 year as a year of intuition and inspiration on top of the patient year 2, and a 22 year as a year of building something large on top of the practical year 4.
Using your personal year in daily life
Pick one word from the description that speaks to you and let it be your word for the year. A year 3 might choose the word "play", a year 4 the word "steady". The page on intention setting for manifestation shows how to phrase it.
A journal helps a lot here. Prompts such as "What does this year want me to begin, build or release?" turn a number into a conversation with yourself, and the manifestation journal prompts page has more ideas. For a new-year ritual, the guide to new year manifestation pairs nicely with your personal year. If you are curious about what your name says, try the name numerology calculator too.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate my personal year number?
Reduce your birth month, birth day and the calendar year to single digits, add the three, and reduce again. For 23 March in 2027: 3 + 5 + 2 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
What is my personal year number for 2027?
It depends on your birthday. Enter your birth month and day in the calculator above and it shows the sum. Because 2027 reduces to 2, your number is your birth month plus birth day plus 2, reduced to one digit.
How do I find my personal month number?
Add your personal year number to the calendar month number (January is 1, February is 2, up to December as 12) and reduce to one digit. Personal year 1 in June gives 1 + 6 = 7.
Does the personal year change on my birthday or on 1 January?
Most calculators, including this one, change it on 1 January with the calendar year. Some teachers change it on your birthday, so you can read both numbers if you like.
